Who Are We?

We are concerned parents, business leaders and educators. Our founder, Maureen Madden, was concerned to hear from her neighbors that she shouldn't send her son to the local public school because the quality of education was far below that of the education she received when she went to public school 30 years ago. She was advised to start looking for a private school. Instead, she went outside the box and formed a non-profit corporation dedicated to raising funds for the public schools. Groups already existed that lobby the school board for change, the state legislators for more money and the teacher's union for better-qualified teachers. But no group was asking for financial help from concerned citizens and business leaders, until Save Our Schools, Inc. was founded.

This great country has charities for just about every cause we can imagine. Why not a charity specifically for raising the quality of our children's education? Why can't the richest, most powerful country also have the best education systems? Few people realize that it costs around $6,500 per student annually for a public school education, only a fraction of which is paid for by our property taxes. Compare this cost to the cost of the high quality education provided by a private school at an average $13,500/year. It's easy to see the funding gap between our current public schools and the quality of education we should be giving our children.
