When the topic of conversation turns to what are carbohydrates, it makes me think of energy. My schooldays were a long time ago, but what I remember is the fact that carbohydrates give you energy. I don’t remember the details of exactly how they do this. It has been worrying me for a few days so I have decided to do an internet search. There is a lot of information, some of it very technical. I am more interested in carbohydrates as a food source of energy. I have found a basic description which I can understand quite well. When we take in food containing carbohydrates, the body converts them into sugars and starches. This is what gives us energy. There are simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and milk. Complex carbohydrates, also known as starches, can be found in whole grain foods, beans, peas and lentils. From now on I am going to include more carbohydrates in our daily meals to give us more energy.
